Who we are:

hugsmilers_framedpic

We are:

The Hugsmilers: We are “huggers.” We’re two awesome little kids who believe in the power of doing good. We love how we feel after we have been thoughtful, helpful, caring and compassionate, just for starters. The hugs that we earn help us to feel secure and loved and inspire us to keep doing good for others. By learning the lessons in this book, we can sprinkle some joy, put some smiles on others faces, and feel we’ve done our small part in making the world a better place. We’ve learned the power of hugs and hope you will too!

Who created us:

the hugsmilers hugs Jess L. Simons

Jess, the Author:

The ultimate believer in the power of hugs and smiles.  What made her this way, why does she believe this? Keep reading to hear her story.

I am a mom, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a special education teacher, an artist, a summer lover, a beach bum, a fan of all things “smiles,” a dessert fiend, and…A HUGGER! Perhaps it’s because I have been through quite a bit in my life or maybe it’s because of the way I was raised, but I firmly believe in the power of hugs and their ability to bring a smile to our face making us feel better and helping to make the world a better place.

Although I’ve struggled with a severe illness most of my life, my parents always taught me to be grateful, reminding me “it could always be worse.” They tried to instill in me a desire to help others as a way to shift my focus so that I never had a chance to feel sorry for myself. The hugs they gave me somehow inbued me with an optimistic outlook, a “can-do” spirit, and confidence to overcome obstacles and achieve my dreams and fight for what I believe is right. And, so, although this new project may seem like a HUGE undertaking, I am dedicated to pursuing my vision to try to make the world a better place, one hug at a time.

With a Masters in Special Education from Fordham University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and Studio Art from New York University, I decided to combine my teaching experience and passion for doing “good” into my first children’s book. My goal is simple – to help kids everywhere learn important life lessons, and in a fun way, inspire them to be better people in their homes, in their schools and in their communities.

After I was blessed with my two special children, I promised myself that I would find a fun and sincere way to impart important values to them without being “preachy.” And, so, I developed the Hugsmilers as characters that embrace the things that I stand for and that I want my children, and children everywhere, to value. I want them to know that the feeling they can get from sharing, being helpful and thoughtful, respectful and kind, can compare to a GIANT HUG, what I call, a hug for their heart.

I sincerely hope that you, along with the special little people in your life, will want to become an active member of our “Hugsmilers” community. It’s easy to join!   Just begin by following the Hugsmilers – two adorable, little loveable characters on a journey of earning by learning and filling their hearts with hugs. My personal “Hugging Ambassadors” love cuddling up, reading the story and then talking about ways they can do their part. I bet your little Huggers will agree with mine☺

And, I’m optimistic in believing that maybe I’ll be lucky enough to be able to thank you in person at one of our upcoming visits to local communities. I look forward to welcoming you and sharing with you my special banana bread, which is just another small way that I like to bring smiles to people’s faces and infuse their hearts with the feeling that only a hug can bring.

What we believe:

Sprinkle hugs...

every chance you get to make the world a kinder and happier place. Join us in our goal to teach children, both big and small, that they have the power to do great things every day.  By instilling in them the desire to do “good,” help out, and be kind, we believe that they will feel better about themselves.  By encouraging them to find their own ways to spread smiles, they will gain the confidence to know that they can, indeed, make a difference.  We ask you to believe in the power of a hug, in the warm, embracing, comforting feeling that hugs provide. Just imagine if we all join together with children in our communities, the ripple effect we will create, and the kinder and happier world we can all enjoy.
